WritersMarket.com - The online guide to writing life
For hsblock@verizon.net October 17, 2009
On Tap Today

FROM THE EDITOR

After nearly 10 years of WritersMarket.com newsletters, we're increasing the circulation from once every two weeks to weekly. Yay!

The biggest reason behind this move is that there's just so much more going on with WritersMarket.com now than ever before. More publishing opportunities listed. The inclusion of writing niche books such as Guide to Literary Agents, Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market, Novel & Short Story Writer's Market, Poet's Market, and Screenwriter's & Playwright's Market. Niche specific pages on the site. And so much more!

As one of the few who's been with site since it's inception, through the ups and downs of the site's development, I can definitely say I've never been more excited or inspired by where WritersMarket.com is and where it's headed. If you're not already taking advantage of the site, click here to sign up today.

Until next we meet, keep writing and marketing what you write.

THREE MAGAZINES ACCEPTING FICTION

WritersMarket.com lists more than 2,000 magazines and publications. Here are three magazines accepting fiction:

Analog Science Fiction & Fact is a monthly magazine for the general future-minded audience. In other words, they're seeking good science fiction. The editors say, "We have no hard-and-fast editorial guidelines, because science fiction is such a broad field that I don't want to inhibit a new writer's thinking by imposing Thou Shalt Nots." This magazine pays 6-8 cents per word, up to $600.

Gray's Sporting Journal is a high-end hunting and fishing magazine—"think Field & Stream meets The New Yorker." As such, the editors warn, "If some aspect of hunting or fishing isn't at the core of the story, it has zero chance of interesting Gray's." This magazine pays $600-1,000 for stories of 1,500-12,000 words.

Subtropics is the literary magazine published 3 times a year from the University of Florida. The editors advise, "You'll see that we don't publish science fiction, fantasy, genre fiction, or anything with talking animals." This magazine pays a flat fee of $1,000 for stories ($500 for short shorts).

EXCERPTS FROM MARKET WATCH

Follow the latest publishing news you can use, updated daily, on our exclusive Market Watch feature, by columnist Debbie Ridpath Ohi. Recent headlines include:

  • Thomas Nelson Adds Self-Publishing Line: Religious publisher Thomas Nelson Inc. is launching West Bow Press, a new line that will be designed, published and distributed by self-publisher Author Solutions Inc. Thomas Nelson editors will apparently be monitoring sales of the books published through the imprint for potential big sellers, but won't be involved in editing the books themselves.
  • Fewer Magazines Closing in 2009: According to the most recent MediaFinder.com report, 383 titles have folded through the third quarter of this year compared to the 613 closed last year.
  • Amazon Offers More Than 18,000 Free E-Book Titles: With more than 18,000 free titles available in Amazon's e-book store, you have to wonder why they keep adding more. The answer: By giving away books, the company hopes to convince potential customers to buy the Kindle e-book reader. Once they have a Kindle, they're also likely to occasionally want to buy a newer title from the store.

Keep checking Market Watch for all your publishing news. Missed a Market Watch item? Subscribers to WritersMarket.com can access a three-month archive of Debbie Ridpath Ohi's Market Watch news.

Q&A: AVOIDING REPETITION IN A NOVEL SERIES

Among the great features on WritersMarket.com are the niche pages (for fiction, nonfiction, poetry, children's writing, scriptwriting, and agents). These pages include several bits of specific information for writers who practice in these niches, including featured resources and expert advice. But my favorite is the Questions & Answers on each niche page.

For instance, Beverle Graves Myers, author of five novels in the Baroque Mystery series published by Poisoned Pen Press, answers the question: "How do you keep a mystery series going without becoming repetitive?"
